ABOUT THE STUDY
In this CD, Flying Broom aims to introduce a wide range of organisations: associations, foundations, groups, initiatives, companies, cooperatives, platforms etc., established by women who have come together in order to advocate women's rights in Turkey, react against gender inequalities and find solutions to issues that are particular to women.
One of the most important aims of Flying Broom is to draw a map of women's organisations in Turkey and therefore facilitating enhanced communication and interaction between organizations, the preparation of the grounds for collaboration, and thus, to contribute to the empowerment of women by these ways.
To date, one of the most serious reasons for the weakness of communication between women's organisations is the absence of adequate information about these organisations. Having knowledge on the number of women's organisations in Turkey, on their aims and addresses, will not only clarify the picture of women's organisations, but also help in the construction of relationships between organisations and formation of collective works. In accordance with this aim, at the end of 2002 Flying Broom prepared the project: 'Database System for Women's Organisations in Turkey'. In order for the existing database to be more healthy and comprehensive, detailed information on women's organisations has been collected within the framework of the project .The field research that was conducted between the 17th February and 3rd April 2003 in 41 cities where women's organisations are concentrated, All the women's organisations in these cities were visited and information was gathered utilising methods of social research, particularly interviews and participant observation. The interviewers were university students, from Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir ve Eskişehir,
While determining the cities that would be in the scope of this research, existing information on women's organisations in the Flying Broom was utilised. Furthermore, this information was compared with the information provided by other official sources, in order to obtain a more comprehensive list. The cities where there is no, or only a few women's organisations were not included in this research. In addition, women's organisations that could not be contacted because of a lack of contact information were also excluded from this research.
The information in the CD contains the names, dates of establishment, contact information and aims of the organisations that were covered in this research. More detailed information about the organisations and their work that was collected during the research will be available on the Flying Broom's website at http://www.ucansupurge.org.
The 'Database System for Women's Organisations in Turkey Project' is sponsored by the British Embassy. Ahu Tatlı, Reyhan Atasü and Nurdan Atalay have worked as project assistants in various phases of the project. Bulent Oztürk was responsible for the design of the database.
Dr. Yıldız Ecevit, lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Gender & Women's Studies Program at Middle East Technical University, has voluntarily undertaken the coordination of the project.
We would like to thank all the people and institutions who have enabled the realisation of this important project through their support and work.
